Sonar and transducer
The Lowrance Hook Reveal 7 HDI Contour+ is basically a SplitShot fish finder, so it offers two sonar technologies. These are standard CHIRP and DownScan. It does not support SideScan. It also does not support ForwardScan, Active Imaging, or Active Target sonar. It supports three frequencies for the CHIRP sonar (50/83/200 kHz) and two frequencies for DownScan (455/800 kHz). The included HDI skimmer transducer can use the 50/200 kHz channels for standard CHIRP, and 455/800 kHz for DownScan.
The transducer features a durable shell made of thermoplastic material. It comes with a transom mount. It has 20 ft. (6 m) of cable and an internal temperature sensor. The unit can also indicate water temperature.
The transducer casts two oval beams for DownScan. Their coverage is 57° / 4° @ 455 kHz, and 38° / 2° @ 800 kHz. The maximum depth of the DownScan sonar that can be achieved with this transducer is 300 ft. (91 m).
For standard CHIRP, the transducer uses conical beams. Their coverage is 12° @ 200 kHz, and 29° @ 50 kHz. Evidently, since it’s the 50/200 kHz skimmer transducer, the maximum depth that can be achieved with it is 3,000 ft. (914 m).
This Lowrance fish finder offers a fairly decent range of standard sonar features. The list includes Fish ID, Circular Flasher, A-Scope, Bottom Lock, Depth Alarm, Fish Alarm, and more. As its name suggests, it has the FishReveal feature that allows you to bring the fish arches from the standard CHIRP sonar view into the DownScan sonar view. This way, you can assess the position of the fish in relation to the bottom, structure, or vegetation. Also, the unit has Sonar Recording, so you can always have a second look at a certain spot that you have already scanned.
Navigation features
The Hook Reveal 7 HDI Contour+ is not only a fish finder; it is a chartplotter as well. It has a built-in GPS receiver and offers a GPS speed function as well. It supports GLONASS, WAAS, MSAS, and EGNOS for position augmentation. It offers functions such as track recording, waypoint saving, and route creation. You can save up to 3,000 waypoints in its memory, 100 routes, and 100 tracks. Each track can have up to 10,000 points.
The unit comes with a C-MAP Contour+ chart card. The Contour+ charts cover the inland and near-shore coastal areas of the continental United States, Hawaii, and Bermuda. They offer high-resolution 1-foot contours for over 15,000 U.S. lakes and 9,400+ Canadian lakes. These charts also show various points of interest with improved icons, as well as custom depth shading. They are considerably better than the older U.S. inland chart base available with the older Hook Reveal 7 versions, such as the 000-15513-001, for example.
The unit supports numerous premium charts from C-MAP and Navionics. The list includes C-MAP Lake Insight, C-MAP Insight Pro, C-MAP MAX N, and MAX N+, C-MAP Precision Contour HD, Navionics Gold, Navionics+, Navionics Platinum+, and more. On top of that, it also has the Genesis Live feature for bathymetric mapping. So, in case the included Contour+ charts do not offer a satisfying detail for your favorite lake, you can always map it yourself.
It’s important to mention, though, that the Hook Reveal units are the most basic chartplotters from Lowrance at the moment. Therefore, they do not have too many networking features and do not support other navigation instruments, like Radar modules, AIS, or external GPS. It also does not support Autopilot equipment.
Control unit features
The Lowrance Hook Reveal 7 HDI Contour+ unit features a 7-inch color SolarMax display with a pixel resolution of 800H x 480V. It offers excellent angle visibility of 80° top/bottom, 85° left/right, and its LED backlight offers a screen brightness higher than 1000 NITS. It is also IPX7 waterproof which essentially means that it can withstand incidental water exposure and rain.
The unit does not have touchscreen technology only the right-side keypad. It features 8 buttons, including Pages, Zoom In, Zoom Out, Cursor, Exit, Menu/Enter, Waypoint, and Power. Its interface is very easy to use and you can customize its home page with various application combos (i.e GPS/Sonar, standard sonar/DownScan, etc) for quick access.
The unit does not have networking features. It does not have an NMEA port or an Ethernet port. It also does not have Bluetooth or WiFi connectivity. However, it does have a microSD card slot that you can load up with the included Contour+ charts or other charts from C-MAP or Navionics.
Last but not least, the unit comes with the standard tilt mount. The box does not include a unit cover or a flush mount. The transducer comes with a standard transom mount.
