For the year 2019, Humminbird has already announced the release of generation G3 fish finders which will include both HELIX G3 and SOLIX G3 units. Therefore, some of the older G2 units are sold in better bundles and at more advantageous prices. As the title suggests, the HELIX 5 CHIRP DI GPS G2 that we’re going to cover here includes the Navionics+ charts. For reference, this is the Humminbird part number 410220-1NAV.

Charts, GPS & other navigation features

As we’ve mentioned above, the Humminbird HELIX 5 410220-1NAV includes a microSD card with the Navionics+ charts for the U.S. and Canada. These are 1 ft HD bathymetry charts that offer coverage for more than 21,000 lakes and water bodies in North America, Nautical Chart guides, Sonar Chart HD bathymetry mapping and free Community Edits for the a full year.

However, in case you’re not going to use the Navionics+ charts, the unit still has its preloaded Humminbird Basemap charts. These charts offer considerably more information and detail than the previous ContourXD map base. To begin with, it covers more than 10,000 U.S. lakes with 1′ depth contours and also covers the coastal waters. It shows depth markers, buoys, marinas, hazards, camping grounds, nav-aids, various points of interest, and more. Also, when you move your cursor over any point of interest marked on the map, you benefit from a pop-up with a lot of information about that particular POI.

Of course, the unit is also compatible with LakeMaster, LakeMaster Plus, supports Navionics Platinum+ which essentially offer the same charts as the included Navionics+, but they also include 3D chart view and satellite imaging. It can also use SmartStrike fishing charts.

AutoChart Live is also a feature included with the HELIX 5 CHIRP DI GPS G2. This application works in a similar way as the Sonar Chart Live from the Navionics charts. It uses the GPS positioning information and the 2D sonar information to reveal and draw the depth contours of your lake on the map. Therefore, if the current charts do not offer satisfying contours for your lake, you can always map it yourself.

Evidently, the unit has internal GPS which can offer position enhancements via WAAS, EGNOS, and MSAS. A GPS speed function is available as well. Plus, the unit can save up to 2,500 waypoints in its memory, offering a decent palette of icons for them so that you can personalize each waypoint. It also has a track plotting function being able to record and save up to 50 tracks with 20,000 points per track, and a route creation function, which allows you to save up to 45 custom routes.

Sonar & transducer

The Humminbird HELIX 5 CHIRP GPS G2 Nav+ includes the classic XNT 9 DI T transducer. This is a plastic transducer with a transom mount and an internal temperature sensor. It has 20′ (6m) of cable.

The unit itself has two types of sonar, 2D CHIRP DualBeam Plus and CHIRP Down Imaging. It supports multiple frequencies. For 2D it supports 50/200 (28-75/130-250 kHz), 83/200 (75-155/130-250 kHz), while for Down Imaging it supports 455 kHz (420-520 kHz), 800 kHz (790-850 kHz). However, with the included XNT 9 DI T transducer, it can only use 200/455 kHz (175-225/420-520 kHz) for its 2D sonar, and 455/800 kHz (420-520/790-850 kHz) for Down Imaging.

For 2D CHIRP the transducer uses two conical beams, 16° @ 455 kHz, and 25° @ 200 kHz. The maximum depth capability for 2D DualBeam Plus with this transducer is 600 ft (183 m).

For CHIRP Down Imaging, the transducer uses two thin beams, approx. 1° fore-to-aft, but considerably wider side-to-side than for 2D. Their coverage is 75° @ 455 kHz, and 45° @ 800 kHz. The maximum depth capability for DI with this transducer is 350 ft (106 m).

Of course, the unit offers an impressive array of standard sonar features. The list includes SwitchFire, Selective Fish ID+, Real Time Sonar, Bottom Lock, Structure ID, various alarms and more. Also, as opposed to other HELIX 5 units, this one also has Sonar Recording.

Control unit features

The HELIX 5 CHIRP DI GPS G2 features a 5-inch diagonal display, 16-bit color, with an 800 x 480 pixel resolution. It has adjustable LED backlight and offers an excellent visibility even from sharp angles. It’s also IPX7 waterproof, which essentially means that the unit can withstand incidental water exposure with no problem.

The unit is keypad operated. It does not have touchscreen technology, like the Simrad GO5 XSE, for example. The navigation through its menus and usage of its internal apps is done via the side keypad.

In terms of networking, the unit supports NMEA 0183, but not NMEA 2000. It supports DSC from DSC-capable VHF radio but does not support AIS or Radar. It also does not have built-in Wi-Fi or Bluetooth.

The unit has a microSD card slot which you can load it with the included Navionics+ card, or other chart cards from LakeMaster and Navionics. Or, you can use a blank data cart for data backup, sonar recording, or even software updates.

Last but not least, the unit includes a Gimbal mount, but a flush mount option is also available (not included).
