Sonar and transducer
The Garmin ECHOMAP UHD 93sv offers three types of sonar, these being 2D CHIRP, ClearVü, and SideVü. Of course, as its name suggests, it has UHD modes for the Cv and Sv sonar in order to provide clearer images and a better target separation.
The unit itself supports multiple frequencies. For example, it’s dual-beam capable and supports 50/200 kHz and 77/200 kHz transducers. It also supports Panoptix sonar and can be paired with Panoptix transducers, such as the PS22.
The unit comes with the new GT54UHD-TM transducer. This transducer supports all three types of sonar built-in the unit. It features a transom mount, has 20 ft. (6 m) of cable, and integrates a temperature sensor.
For the unit’s 2D sonar, the transducer uses a High-Wide CHIRP beam featuring a conical shape. It uses the 150-240 kHz frequency channel and the beam’s coverage 24°-16°. The maximum depth capability for the 2D beam is 800 ft. (244 m). However, if the unit is paired with a 50 kHz capable transducer, it can reach depths up to 2,300 ft. (701 m).
For UHD SideVü, the transducer uses the 1,060-1,170 kHz frequency channel. However, the system also offers the possibility of using regular SideVü sonar at 425-485 kHz. The side beams have an oval shape. Their coverage is 125 ft. (38 m) of UHD Sv, and 500 ft. (152 m) for regular Sv.
For UHD ClearVü, the transducer can only use the 800 kHz channel, with a CHIRP range of 760-880 kHz. Similar to the side beams, the Cv beam is oval-shaped, but it’s cast directly under the boat. Its coverage is 0.94° x 60° and offers a depth capability of 200 ft. (61 m).
Needless to say, the unit makes available a wide array of sonar functions and applications. Among them, we can count A-Scope, Bottom Lock, Fish Symbols, Sonar Recording, Circular Flasher, various alarms, etc.
Navigation features
Since it’s a “93sv” model, the Garmin 010-02342-01 is preloaded with the LakeVü g3 charts. These offer coverage for the US inland waters. They include depth contours for more than 17,000 lakes, reservoirs and rivers. They’re enhanced with Navionics data and provide more information than the previous LakeVü g2. They also make available features like Depth Range Shading and Auto Guidance.
The unit also supports BlueChart g3 and BlueChart g3 Vision coastal charts. Also, you can upgrade the included LakeVü g3 charts to LakeVü g3 Ultra for extra features like High-Res Relief Shading, Dynamic Lake Level, and 3D Views.
Although the new LakeVü g3 feature Navionics data, they don’t have the SonarChart feature. However, the Garmin ECHOMAP UHD 93sv has Quickdraw Contours which is a similar depth contour recording feature. It uses the 2D sonar data and the GPS data to reveal and draw the depth contours of the lake you’re scanning on the map. Therefore, you can create your own fishing charts with the most up to date contours.
Needless to say, the unit has internal GPS. It features a 5 Hz GPS receiver so it provides position updates five times per second. It supports WAAS, EGNOS, and MSAS for position augmentation. It also has a GPS speed function.
The unit can hold up to 5,000 personalized waypoints in its memory. It also has route creation and track plotting functions. You can create and save up to 100 routes and up to 50 tracks. Each track can be converted to a route if needed; also, each track can have up to 50,000 plot points.
The SailAssist page is also available with this Garmin unit. The sail assist features include laylines, enhanced wind rose, heading and course-over-ground lines, time to burn before the start and the race times. Also, the unit supports AIS data, DSC data, and is ActiveCaptain compatible. It does not support Radar, though.
Control unit features
The Garmin ECHOMAP UHD 93sv features a 9-inch display, WVGA type, with a pixel matrix of 800 x 400, and LED backlight. It is also IPX7 waterproof.
The unit itself has a highly intuitive interface. It has built-in touchscreen technology and can be operated as a tablet or as any other multi-function display. However, it also has the side keypad which can be a plus because touching the display during fishing can get it really dirty in a short time.
In terms of networking, the unit has NMEA 0183 ports and supports NMEA 2000. Therefore, you can connect it to an already existent boat grid so it can communicate with other boat instruments. It also has built-in WiFi and is compatible with the free ActiveCaptain app. This app can provide up-to-date feedback on various points of interest, chart updates, data back up or accessing the Garmin Quickdraw Community. It can also push smart notifications from your phone to your chartplotter display.
The unit is equipped with a microSD card slot. Therefore, you can load it with BlueChart g3 charts or LakeVü g3 Ultra. Or, you can use a blank data card up to 32 GB for various backups, or sonar logs.
Finally, the unit comes with the classic Garmin quick-release mount, but a flush mount is also included along with a unit cover.
