Sonar and transducer
The ECHOMAP 73sv 010-02519-01 fish finder supports four sonar technologies. These are standard CHIRP sonar, ClearVü sonar, SideVü sonar, and Panoptix sonar. However, in order to use Panoptix live sonar, you will need a Panoptix transducer which is not included.
The unit also supports multiple frequencies. The list includes 50/77/200 kHz for standard CHIRP, and 260/455/800/1000 kHz for SideVü and ClearVü. The older ECHOMAP 73sv unit with the GT54UHD transducer did not support 1000 kHz, so this is a plus. The unit is also dual-frequency capable. In other words, if paired with a 77/200 kHz transducer, or a 50/200 kHz transducer, it can use both 2D sonar beams simultaneously.
The included GT56UHD transducer comes with a transom mount, has 25 ft. (7.6 m) of cable with a 12-pin connector, and integrates a temperature sensor. For standard CHIRP it can only use the 150-240 kHz frequency range. So, technically with this transducer you can only use High CHIRP for the standard sonar. The standard beam is conical; it has a coverage of 24° – 16° with a maximum depth range of 800 ft. (244 m).
For SideVü and ClearVü, the GT56UHD transducer can use three frequencies. These are 455 kHz (425-485 kHz), 800 kHz (790-850 kHz), and 1000 kHz (940-1100 kHz). The beams are oval. Their coverage is 1.1° x 52° @ 455 kHz, 0.64° x 35° @ 800 kHz, and 0.52° x 52° @ 1000 kHz. The maximum depth range is 400 ft. (122 m) for the ClearVü sonar, and the maximum side range for the SideVü sonar is 500 ft. (152 m).
The unit also makes available a wide range of standard sonar features. Among them, we can count Circular Flasher, A-Scope, Fish Symbol ID, Bottom Lock, Fish Alarm, Depth Alarm, etc. As we’ve mentioned above, the unit has the new Vivid colors for the structure scanning sonar which can be quite useful in certain situations depending on the structure of the underwater environment. Sonar Recording and a Temperature Graph feature are also available.
Navigation features
Similar to the ECHOMAP UHD 93sv 010-02523-01, the 73sv 010-02519-01 model is equipped with the LakeVü g3 charts. These offer depth contours for more than 17,000 lakes, reservoirs, and rivers. They’re enhanced with Navionics data and provide more information than the previous LakeVü g2. They also make available features like Depth Range Shading and Auto Guidance.
Needless to say, the unit supports the Garmin coastal charts BlueChart g3 and BlueChart g3 Vision, as well as the superior version of the lake charts, LakeVü g3 Ultra.
The Quickdraw Contours feature is also available with this Garmin fish finder. This application uses the GPS data and CHIRP sonar data to reveal and record the depth contours of the lake that you are scanning. Thus, you can create your own custom bathymetric maps with the most up-to-date contours which is great especially if the LakeVü g3 charts don’t offer coverage for your favorite lake.
The unit’s internal GPS receiver operates at 5 Hz. This means it can provide position updates 5 times per second. Waypoint creation, route creation, and track recording functions are also available. You can save up to 100 routes in the unit’s memory, 5,000 waypoints, and 50 tracks, with 50,000 points per track. Also, the unit supports WAAS, EGNOS, and MSAS for position correction.
The ECHOMAP units do not support Radar. However, the unit supports AIS data, DSC data, and is compatible with the ActiveCaptain app which offers a wide array of planning and navigation aid features. And finally, the unit has the SailAssist features which include laylines, enhanced wind rose, heading and course-over-ground lines, time to burn before the start, and the race times.
Control unit features
The Garmin ECHOMAP UHD 73sv 010-02519-01 features a 7-inch color display with a pixel resolution of 800H x 400V, and LED backlight. It combines touchscreen technology with keypad technology for usage and navigation and has a highly intuitive and easy-to-use interface. It is IPX7 waterproof and comes with the quick-release mount. A protective cover and a flush mount are also included.
The unit offers a fairly decent range of networking features. It supports both NMEA 0183 and NMEA 2000. Therefore, you can easily integrate it into an already existent boat grid, connect it to various compatible autopilot units, weather, Fusion-Link audio systems, VHF radio units, AIS units, heading sensors, etc. It’s also compatible with Garmin Force trolling motors.
Wireless connectivity is also available. Therefore, you can sync it with your smartphone via the ActiveCaptain app in order to access OneChart, access the Garmin Quickdraw Community to download or upload charts created via the Quickdraw Contours application, update the unit’s software with ease, and even get smart notifications from your phone.
