Sonar and transducer
The ECHOMAP Ultra 102sv has built-in support for all types of Garmin sonar. It has traditional CHIRP sonar, ClearVü, SideVü, offering ultra high-definition modes for CV and SV. It also supports Panoptix LiveScope; however, in order to use the new Panoptix LiveScope sonar, you will need the Panoptix transducer which is not included.
As we’ve mentioned above, this is the Garmin 010-02111-01 unit, which includes the GT54UHD-TM transducer. This transducer is equipped with a transom mount, it has an internal temperature sensor and 20 ft (6 m) of cable with a 12-pin connector. This transducer supports the unit’s 2D CHIRP sonar, ClearVü sonar, and SideVü sonar. As its name suggests, it is a UHD transducer and offers 1.2 MHz scanning capabilities for high-quality imaging.
For UHD SideVü, as 1.2 MHz (1,080-1,230 kHz), the transducer uses oval beams. They can extend on each side of the boat up to 125′ (38 m). The approx. coverage of each beam is 0.441°x52°. The depth capability of the UHD SideVü mode is 30′ (9.1 m). However, this Garmin fish finder also offers the possibility to use regular SideVü sonar at 455 kHz (425-485 kHz), which provides excellent imaging with a greater depth capability, up to 125′ (38 m) and a greater side beam coverage, up to 500′ (152 m).
For UHD ClearVü, the transducer can operate at 800 kHz (760-880 kHz). The down beams are oval just as for SideVü, but they scan directly under the boat. The approx. coverage of the 800 kHz beam is 0.94°x60°. For UHD ClearVü, the maximum depth capability is 200 ft (61 m). Plus, the system also offers the possibility to use the 455 kHz (425-845 kHz) mode for a greater depth capability.
For 2D High-Wide CHIRP, the transducer offers only one mode in a frequency range of 150-240 kHz. The beam is conical, not oval as for CV and SV, and has a variable coverage between 24°-16°. The maximum depth capability that this Garmin fish finder system can reach when using the 2D sonar is 800 ft (244 m).
Naturally, the unit offers the full range of standard sonar features. It has Bottom Lock, Amplitude Scope, Fish Symbols, the Circular Flasher mode for ice fishing, Depth Alarm, Fish Alarm, Sonar Recording, and more. A Temperature Graph function is also available.
Navigation features
As opposed to the ECHOMAP Ultra 106sv, the 102sv model does not include the LakeVü g3 and BlueChart g3 charts. It is the unit intended for worldwide use and has the Worldwide Basemap built-in. These charts only offer basic detail, but the unit is compatible with all the other charts from Garmin. Therefore, you can always upgrade its chart base to LakeVü g3, LakeVü g3 Ultra, BlueChart g3, or BlueChart g3 Vision. Unfortunately, even though this is one of the newest Garmin units for 2019, it still does not provide Navionics support.
Regardless of the charts that you will be using, the unit has its own built-in sonar mapping feature, the Garmin Quickdraw Contours. This application utilizes the data provides by the internal GPS and the 2D sonar in order to reveal and draw the depth contours of your lake on the map. Therefore, you can scan any body of water and create your own personalized charts with the most up to date depth contours. Plus, since the unit has wireless connectivity, you can always upload your charts and share them with the Garmin Quickdraw Contours Community, or download the charts uploaded by other anglers.
The ECHOMAP Ultra 102sv has a built-in 10 Hz GPS receiver. This being said, it can provide position updates 10 times per second. It makes available WAAS and EGNOS position augmentation. It also has a GPS speed function.
The unit has a waypoint creation function, a route creation function, and a trackplotting function. It can save up to 5,000 waypoints in its memory, and you can customize each waypoint by choosing from a wide palette of icons to make the more suggestive. You can also create and save up to 100 routes, and record up to 50 tracks with up to 50,000 points for each track.
As opposed to the GPSMAP units, the ECHOMAP Ultra 102sv does not have an internal Radar application and does not support Radar units. However, it does support AIS units, can display position data from DSC-capable VHF radio. It also supports FUSION-Link™ compatible radios. Plus, it offers a wide array of gauges and graphs for information with regards to your engine, fuel, trips, wind, tides, and currents, and more.
Control unit features
As the number in the name of the unit suggests, the Garmin ECHOMAP Ultra 102sv has a 10-inch display. Needless to say, it’s a full-color LCD display, with LED backlight. It has a pixel resolution of 1280H x 800V in order to provide crisp imaging for the sonar and chart applications. It is also IPX7 waterproof.
The unit’s interface offers both touchscreen and keypad support. This being said, it responds to any touch command just like any other tablet or smartphone. Its start page can be customized with the most used applications for quick access, and you can work with up to four applications in split-screen.
The unit has NMEA 0183 input and output ports (1 each), 2 Garmin Marine Network™ ports for large connectors, and also supports NMEA 2000. This being said, you can share data between various Garmin units, or enable your ECHOMAP Ultra 102sv unit to communicate with different other instruments such as AIS units, VHF radios, FUSION-Link compatible radios, external GPS sensors, and more. Also, the unit has a dual microSD card reader.
Wireless connectivity (built-in WiFi) is also available with this Garmin unit. Therefore, you can sync it with your smartphone or tablet via the ActiveCaptain app. This app gives you the possibility to improve your fishing experience from anywhere, pre-fish a lake before even going out on the water, access the Garmin Quickdraw Contours Community for charts, use your purchased cartography from anywhere, and even benefit from smart notifications from your phone.
Last but not least, the quick-disconnect bail mount is included with this unit. All the connectors plug into the mount, so you can easily detach your unit and take it with you if needed. A flush mount and a unit cover are also included.
