Sonar features
The unit has three different built-in sonar technologies. These are 2D CHIRP traditional sonar, CHIRP ClearVü, and CHIRP SideVü. However, it’s also compatible with Panoptix all-seeing sonar. It supports multiple base frequencies for both 2D and structure scanning sonar. For example, it can work with 50/200 kHz or 77/200 kHz transducers, while for ClearVü and SideVü it supports 260/455/800 kHz. Evidently, depending on the transducer you will be pairing it with, it can use Low, Medium or High CHIRP.
As we’ve mentioned above, a transducer is not included with the ECHOMAP Plus 92cv. However, the list of compatible transducers with this unit includes the GT30-TM, GT50-TM, GT51-TM, Airmar B60, or the Panoptix PS30 or PS31. The most preferred transducer for this unit by most anglers is the GT52HW-TM, the one included with the ECHOMAP Plus 93sv unit.
The unit’s transducer connector has 12 pins. However, an 8-pin to 12-pin adapter cable is included.
The system’s depth capability depends on the transducer. For example, if you opt for the GT52HW-TM, it should be able to reach 800′ (244 m) in 2D, and 500′ (152 m) when using CV/SV.
The unit offers a wide array of standard sonar features. For example, it has A-Scope, Fish Symbols, Bottom Lock, Circular Flasher for ice fishing, various alarms, a temperature graph function, and more. It also has Sonar Recording and Sonar Rewind functions, but in order to record sonar, you will need a microSD data card as support for the recording.
Navigation features
Along with the fish finding features, the Garmin ECHOMAP Plus 92sv also offers a wide array of navigation features. To begin with, it integrates a 5 Hz internal GPS receiver. This means it can provide position updates 5 times per second. Its GPS system has speed calculation function, and can also offer position enhancement fixes via WAAS or EGNOS.
Since this is a unit for international use, it includes the Garmin Worldwide Basemap. As their name suggests, these are basic charts. They focus on providing clear political boundaries between water and land, showing most lakes, reservoirs, rivers, seas, and oceans. A tide tables function is also available.
However, the unit is compatible with the in-land and off-shore charts for North America. In other words, you can update the internal chart base of the unit to LakeVü HD, LakeVü HD Ultra, BlueChart g2, or BlueChart g2 Vision. These charts offer considerably more detail and several other features such as depth contour shading or the Garmin AutoGuidance.
The unit also has the Quickdraw Contours feature. This is similar to the AutoChart Live offered by the Humminbird units. It’s a feature that uses the GPS and 2D sonar information in order to reveal and draw the depth contours of your lake on the map. This way, you can create personalized fishing charts with the most up to date depth contours. You can also upload your custom charts on the Garmin Quickdraw Contours Community to share them with other anglers, or download already created charts from there, since the unit has built-in Wi-Fi. Also, via the ActiveCaptain mobile app, you can sync your unit with your smartphone or tablet in order to improve your overall navigation experience and even benefit from smart notifications from your phone.
The SailAssist features are available with this unit as well. These features include laylines, enhanced wind rose, heading, and course-over-ground lines. They can help you gain a wind-maximizing edge, give you the possibility to see true and apparent wind angle and speed. A pre-race guidance page shows you the virtual starting line along with data fields showing laylines, time to burn before the start and the race timer.
The unit offers the possibility to save up to 5,000 waypoints in its memory. It has route creation and track recording functions. You can save up to 50 recorded tracks and up to 100 routes. Each recorded track can have up to 50,000 points, and can always be converted to a route.
Last but not least, this Garmin chartplotter supports data from AIS units such as the VHF 210 AIS marine radio, external GPS, and DSC from DSC capable VHF radio units. It also supports FUSION-Link compatible radios.
Control unit features
As its name suggests, the ECHOMAP Plus 92sv features a 9-inch display, with a pixel matrix of 400×800. It’s a WVGA, full-color display with integrated adjustable LED backlight, offering an excellent view of the sonar, GPS and charts even from angles as sharp as 70°.
The unit is IPX7 waterproof. This essentially means that it can survive incidental water exposure such as splashes, rain or snow, and even immersions in freshwater up to 1 meter.
Just as the other ECHOMAP Plus 9 units, this one has a keypad-assisted touchscreen interface. In other words, it responds to most commands via touchscreen just as a tablet, but also has a side keypad for navigation and selection. Its interface is highly intuitive. It allows you to pin to the homepage the most-used apps. Also, it provides split-screen possibilities for up to 4 apps per view.
In terms of networking, the unit has NMEA 0183 ports but it is also compatible with NMEA 2000 networks. It can share waypoints and other data with most other Garmin units. Also, as we’ve mentioned above, it has built-in Wi-Fi and is compatible with the ActiveCaptain application. This app not only allows you to create a network between your smartphone and your Garmin unit, it also gives you the possibility to pre-fish a lake, create routes and waypoints, and once you are on the water, you can transfer them into your unit.
The unit is equipped with one microSD card slot which can take data cards up to 32 GB. Therefore, you can update your charts, backup your data, save recorded sonar, or even get unit software updates via data card.
There are two mounts included with this unit. One is the tilt mount with the quick-release cradle. This offers quite a bit of flexibility to the unit as all the cables plug into the mount, not into the unit, so you can quickly disconnect the unit and take it with you if needed. The other is a flush mount for surface integration. A protective cover is also included.
