Sonar & transducer

Just as the SOLIX 12 CHIRP MEGA SI GPS that we’ve previously reviewed here, the 10″ model includes the XM 14 20 MSI T transducer. This transducer has a transom mount, a built-in temperature sensor, and 20′ (6 meters) of cable. It supports the unit’s 83/200/455/800 kHz and 1.2 MHz frequencies. However, the unit is also capable of operating at 50 kHz.

The unit’s sonar has CHIRP technology, which enables it to provide a better target separation, clearer image with less clutter, and a better determination between structure, fish, and bottom.

With the included transducer, this Humminbird fish finder makes available three types of sonar, these being DualBeam Plus, MEGA Down Imaging, and MEGA Side Imaging. For DualBeam Plus, it uses the same frequencies as the SOLIX 10 CHIRP GPS – 83/200 kHz. For these frequencies, the transducer uses conical beams with a coverage of 60° @ 83 kHz, and 20° @ 200 kHz. The CHIRP modulation intervals are 75-155 kHz and 130-250 kHz, while the maximum depth capability of the 2D sonar with this transducer is 1,500 ft (457 m).

For Down Imaging, MEGA DI and regular DI modes are available. Regular DI uses the 455 kHz channel, with a thin, 75° that has a depth capability of 400 ft (122 m). MEGA DI uses the 1.2 MHz channel, with a coverage of 45° and a depth capability of 125 ft (38 m). The CHIRP modulation intervals are 420-520 kHz, and 1150 – 1275 kHz.

For Side Imaging, you can also use MEGA SI and regular SI. For regular Side Imaging (at 455 kHz), the transducer will use two thin lateral beams, with angles of 86°, able to extend up to 400 ft (122 m) on each side, with a total side-to-side coverage of 800 ft (244 m). For MEGA Side Imaging, the side beams will only extend up to 125 ft (38 m) on each side, 250 ft (76 m) in total. Also, if the CHIRP mode is enabled, the sonar pulse will be modulated in a frequency range between 420-520 kHz instead of a flat 455 kHz, and 1150-1275 kHz instead of a flat 1.2 MHz, evidently providing higher detail.

Last but not least, the SOLIX 10 CHIRP MEGA SI GPS unit offers all the necessary standard sonar features. Among them, we can count Selective Fish ID+, RTS, SwitchFire, Bottom Lock, Sonar SnapShot, Fish Alarm, Depth Alarm etc. It also has Sonar Recording and Sonar Rewind. Therefore, you can record your sonar history and scroll back through it if you want to take a second look at a certain area that you have scanned.

GPS & charts

This Humminbird SOLIX unit integrates a 10 Hz internal GPS, which pretty much means that it can provide position updates 10 times per second. Therefore, the movement of the boat appears on the map in real time, without jumping from a point to another. The unit’s GPS can provide position fixes enhanced by EGNOS, MSAS, or WAAS. It can also calculate the speed of your boat.

As opposed to the HELIX units, the SOLIX offer more storage for waypoints. This unit doesn’t make an exception; it can store up to 10,000 waypoints, and up to 50 routes. Evidently, it also has the track plotting function and can record up to 50 tracks with up to 20,000 points per track. Tracks can be converted to routes, you can add waypoints to them and re-trace them.

Like all the other units released in 2018, the Humminbird SOLIX 10 CHIRP MEGA SI GPS includes the Humminbird Basemaps. These charts are based on NOAA, LakeMaster, and other trusted chart sources. They’re considerably superior to the older ContourXD and UniMap. They provide depth contours, points of interest, nav-aids, and spot-soundings the entire U.S. coastline. They also cover more than 10,000 lakes.

Needless to say, the unit is compatible with various premium charts. The list of chart compatibilities includes LakeMaster Plus, Navionics Gold, Navionics Platinum, and the SmartStrike fishing charts.

AutoChart Live is also a feature available with this unit. AC Live allows you to reveal and record the depth contours of the lake or body of water where you’re fishing. It uses the 2D sonar data and the GPS data in order to provide you with the most up to date depth contours. So, in case the internal database of charts doesn’t cover your lake, you’re still covered. AC Live can record up to 8 hours of contours. However, you can use a Zero Lines microSD card for expanded and improved depth contour recording possibilities.

This SOLIX unit can also support various external modules, including AIS, HD RADAR, Autopilot or i-Pilot Link.

Control unit features

With the exception of the extra sonar features, the control unit is pretty much the same as the SOLIX 10 CHIRP GPS. To begin with, it features a 10.1″ LCD display, with a 16-bit color range, and a pixel matrix of 1280 x 800, a bit better than the HELIX 10 units, which only have a resolution of 1024 x 600 (more pixels, better imaging). It also has adjustable LED backlight offering excellent readability in direct sunlight.

The unit includes the classic Gimbal mount; however, a kit for surface mounting is also optionally available.

The SOLIX 10 CHIRP MEGA SI GPS is a CrossTouch unit. Differently put, it can be controlled as a tablet via touchscreen, but also has a keypad on the right. It has a user-friendly interface, with highly intuitive menus and functions. Its home page is customizable, giving you the possibility to add the most used apps to it for quick access. It also offers a split screen format which can include up to 4 apps at once.

Needless to say, the unit offers superior networking features. It has high-speed Ethernet allowing you to build a professional fishing system or connect various add-ons to the unit, such as Minn Kota i-Pilot units, Radar or AIS units. It supports NMEA 2000. It has a dual microSD card reader. It’s also Bluetooth enabled and compatible with the RC2 remote control. The Bluetooth connection also allows you to pair your unit with your smartphone in order to get smart notifications on the display.
